Our Vision

The Maryland School for the Blind (MSB) fosters a nurturing and inclusive environment where students with blindness or low vision, of all abilities, can achieve their full potential. We empower them with the skills and knowledge they need to navigate their world independently and meaningfully.

What We Do

MSB offers a comprehensive range of services and programs to meet the diverse needs of our students. Our curriculum, known as the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), forms the bedrock of our educational approach. It focuses on:

• Compensatory Skills: Strengthening visual, auditory, and motor skills.
• Independent Living: Learning daily living and self-care skills like cooking, budgeting, and time management.
• Orientation and Mobility: Developing spatial awareness and safe navigation skills.
• Assistive Technology: Proficiency in using technology like Braille readers, screen readers, and speech-to-text software.
• Career Education: Exploring post-secondary options and planning for meaningful careers.

Beyond the Classroom

MSB's holistic approach to education extends beyond the traditional classroom setting. We offer:

Founded in 1853, MSB boasts a rich 170-year history of empowering young people with visual impairments. Today, we stand as a leading state-funded school, serving over 200 students from across Maryland. Our diverse student body represents a wide range of eye conditions, and we are committed to providing them with the tailored support they need to thrive.
